Mom's advice

When I was a kid, my mom told me to never write a diary. She said once you write it down, your words stay out there FOREVER and you can't take them back.

I followed her advice for the most part. I never broke up with a boyfriend using the written word. I never wrote down my feelings and shared them with any one.

I kept journals only a couple times in my life. Once in junior high, when I was a flag girl for the community band and we went on tour. All the stupid crushes, rivalries and drama made me want to vomit when I read them years later. My mom never told me that - that my own words of triviality would make me sick with embarrassment.

So why am I blogging now??? Well, I've got a lot of interesting stories to tell. Maybe I do want my words to stay out there forever for you.

My Blog Objective

Because of its entertainment industry, sunny climate, and self-aggrandizing culture, LA is unique.

I also think Los Angeles has more polarizing connotations with people than most other cities have. I remember a layover in Colorado many years ago, and talking to a guy who asked me where I lived. I told him "LA."

Guy: "I"m sorry."
Me: "Why?"
Guy: (Gives litany of the worst things about LA.)
Me: "Have ever been there???"
Guy: "No."

I wanted to bash the guy's face in. How dare he put down my hometown when he's never even been there before?!

People that don't live there hate it because they're jealous. Who wouldn't want to live in a city that has gorgeous women glittering like diamonds everywhere? Who wouldn't want to live in the city where rewards for creative work promise fortune? Who wouldn't want to live in a city where you can wear short sleeved shirts every day?

Yet, people that live there long enough hate it too. It is an ugly city. There's endless sprawl that is monotonous and tedious. Traffic is more hideous than a person can possibly imagine. It will suck your life away. The pretty San Gabriel Mountains are barely visible most days. The desperation of people to "make it big" is everywhere and breeds competition amongst neighbors and friends.

Through this blog, I want to examine and reflect on Los Angeles, LA, La-La Land, Hollywood, Tinseltown (or whatever you want to call it) as someone who grew up there, lived there, loved it, achieved success, and left it. I also want to contrast it with my new life in another city in another state.
